INNOVATIVE WORK
INNOVATIVE WORK
REPORT
1.
INTRODUCTION
An innovative work can
be defined as a “new idea, device, or method”. It is something original and
more effective and as a consequence, new that “breaks into” the pupil. Two
interesting dimensions of innovation including: degree of novelty and type of
innovation. Innovative work should be a catalyst to growth. Innovation may be
linked to positive changes in efficiency, productivity, quality, competitiveness
and intellectual development. Through innovative work the teacher can improve
students’ performance by providing group work opportunities and resources to
innovate. It is necessary to create and nurture an environment of innovation.
Teaching
and learning process is one of the most important educational processes which
comprehensively cares from achieving educational objectives all the way up to
assessment. Due to the fact that it is a highly complicated process in terms of
both nature and procedures, it is often observed that each student has a unique
learning style that is formed by having a specific learning pattern used for
gaining knowledge from the educational experiences presented to them. Such
favored learning patterns ought to be highly considered by students, teachers,
as well parents as they are crucial for making the best use of them to improve
means of instructions in addition to knowledge acquisition by the students.
Recognizing effective learning patterns makes the learning process more
effective, economical, efficient, easier, and continuous (Gaines, 2012). A
teacher can thus utilize such patterns to offer educational experiences using
appropriate methods which are favored by students.
‘‘A picture is worth a thousand words,’’ but
only if one can comprehend it. Otherwise, it is just a page decoration at best
and a waste of space at worst. Considering how many graphics are found in
textbooks and other non-fiction texts for children and adults and the amount of
information they contain, it is important to understand what readers are doing
when they see these graphics, how they are processing them, how they are
understanding them, and whether these graphics are contributing to their
overall comprehension of the text. This study begins to address some of these
questions by investigating: What is the relationship, if any, between
children’s processes prompted by the graphics in informational text and their
overall comprehension of those texts?
2. Purpose of the Work
As a part of Teaching
Practice Session 2, I opted an Innovative Work based on the Chapter “Rosa Parks
Sat Still”. Based on this Chapter I prepared an Infographics to make the
students familiarise the storyline of the chapter. As part of the Innovative
work preparation I also developed the skill of using different online
educational tools to make classes more interactive and engaging. The use of
infographics in educational process will reduce language barriers when teaching
in an educational institution since infographics improve the perception of
educational content regardless of the language environment of students. The use
of innovative technology-enhanced media as a pedagogical tool has been the
subject of great interest in education and has remained a prevalent approach in
the last few years (Dabbagh & Kitsantas, 2012; Ferreira, Baptista &
Arroio, 2013; Potter & Banaji, 2012). It is important for educators to
understand how students process the information contained in infographics since
infographics can provide a way to reach students with varied learning styles,
particularly visual learners (Lankow et al., 2012; Smiciklas, 2012).
Furthermore, Davis and Quinn (2013) suggest that effective and well-prepared
infographics can work as useful learning materials to support the development
of students. Similarly, Lazard and Atkinson (2015) state that infographics
consisting of text and visuals have a positive effect on the growth of the
readers.
Conclusion
Since the world has recently become
more accumulative in the sense of information, we feel
bored
while receiving and dealing with such a huge amount of data. Hence, the need
for such
infographic designs emerged as they have a vital
role in simplifying such information and making such data processing much
easier and faster. As for teaching the fundamentals of English language for the
student who do not have a English speaking environment enables the student to
learn better, I believe that teaching the visual approach first makes reading
much faster. It fosters information in the students’ minds and enables them to
read it easily and analyzing data smoothly in an attractive way.
